Our Story · Since 1985

From a garage in Tyrone
to every corner of Pennsylvania.

Family-owned. Decades deep. Still hands-on. The Professional Homewreckers.

Where We Came From

Some companies are built to scale.
Some are built to last.

G&R was built to do both — without losing the thing that made it work in the first place.

What started in a garage in 1985 has grown into one of Central Pennsylvania's most trusted names in excavating and demolition. The fleet has multiplied. The acres have stacked up. The crew has grown to over sixty. But the standard hasn't moved an inch.

Founded by Glenn Ray, a Tyrone native with dirt in his boots and hard work in his DNA, G&R began with five employees, two trucks, and a backhoe and front-end loader. From day one, Glenn believed in doing the job right, taking pride in his work, and never being afraid to get his hands dirty — a mindset that still defines G&R today.

"Doing the job right. Taking pride in the work. Never being afraid to get our hands dirty." — The G&R Standard

The operation is still run the way Glenn ran it on day one: hands-on, family-owned, and honest about what it takes to do the job. Recycling and sustainability have always been a priority — long before it was trendy. We don't tear things down to make a mess. We tear them down to put the materials back to work.

Every project — from a residential teardown in Tyrone to a commercial demolition in Philadelphia — gets the same answer: hard work, integrity, and getting it done right. Every single time.

Our Story

One mission.
Built brick by brick.

1985

The Garage

Glenn Ray plants a flag in Tyrone. Five employees. Two trucks. A backhoe and a front-end loader. Day one of G&R Excavating.

2002

Tyrone Headquarters

Outgrew the original garage and moved to 900 Pennsylvania Avenue. Opened the warehouses that would eventually become G&R Bits N Pieces — a second life for materials salvaged from demolition projects.

2005

Roll-Off Containers

Launched the roll-off business — supporting our own jobsites and renting to outside customers. One more way to keep projects moving.

2010

The Landscaping Yard

Expanded the main yard. Started crushing our own backfill and stone in-house. Stone, mulch, and topsoil joined the inventory for contractors and homeowners.

2015

Darby Lane

Opened the Darby Lane yard. Built shops to keep trucks and equipment running. Expanded the scrap operation Glenn had been part of since the very beginning.

2020

Metal Purchasing

Officially began purchasing both ferrous and non-ferrous metals from customers — strengthening the recycling mission that's been core to G&R since the start.

Today

Built to Last

60+ employees. 35 trucks. 19 excavators. Family-owned. Hands-on. Going strong from Pittsburgh to Philadelphia — commercial and residential, no project too big or too small.

By the Numbers

Everything we own.
Everything we run. In-house.

When you hire G&R, you hire G&R — not a network of subcontractors. We own the equipment. We employ the operators. We run the yard.

Behind the Brand

The Founder

A Tyrone native
with dirt on his boots.

Glenn started G&R in 1985 with a backhoe, a front-end loader, two trucks, and the kind of work ethic that only comes from growing up in Central Pennsylvania. Decades later, he's still on the yard, still walking jobsites, and still personally involved in every aspect of the operation.

That hands-on approach is the reason G&R has grown without losing what made it work in the first place. The crew knows him. The customers know him. The phone gets answered.
